AI is a phenomenal leap in technology so what leap/s should we make in science museums to address ethical issues in AI? AI is unlike any previous generations of technology because, as philosopher Yuval Harari says, for the first time in history, a tool – AI- is smarter than its human maker. Even 2024 Nobel prize winner Geoffrey Hinton who won it for his work in AI said that they really do not understand how AI works and that we should be worried if it will really deliver for good. And ethics is about doing good or at least, causing no harm. So as science museums who have traditionally relied on exhibitions to engage people on science and tech issues, what kind of imagination and boldness do science museums need or can do to address AI ethical issues which include but are not limited to privacy, discrimination, transparency, job displacements as well as “genuine" learning. This session will try to give examples of engagement of AI ethical issues in science museums that push the boundaries beyond exhibitions and other traditional forms of science engagement.
